The Saturday of The Blade was wall-to-wall and wire-to-wire. The bags flew, the balls flew, time flew, and Big Al is gonna pretend he has the flu so he can take Sunday off to count out his tip jar. Just a spectacular event. The weather could not have been better, and the breeze was blowing straight out to dead center. You will not find a better KTown event than the Saturday of The Blade. Here are some observations from the main event:
The cover picture says it all…a gaggle of KTowners all pushed together for a great cause and to celebrate the life of a great dude. Highlighted by Glen “Smooth” Marescalco and Mike “Worm” Selovich dead center….legend.
It was fantastic how many little people were there. I mean we are talkin multiple infants, one and two weeks old. Tons of tots and toddlers. And when you got names like Horus Tussler and Reggie Ronald Schuler, it is great to know the legacy will continue.
This year’s “friend I got to hang with more than usual” was Durk. Just a solid dude…love him like a pretend cousin. And the nickname “Dirty World” is one of the best I’ve ever tagged someone with.
I only got to heckle one Dons game of bags. Swa and Big Daddy rolled while Sweet and I talked shit from the sidelines. The Dons are that rare breed where we blast our own people. No clue who won it all, but I bet they were good.
The softball was absolutely top-notch. Very few blowouts. Plenty of homers but also plenty of base runnin and playin D. Winning The Blade is no longer just nostalgia. And it is pretty much all KTown dudes and KTown teams. Fabulous.
I was able to chow on the Eat Da Meats brisket sandwich. Really solid. I saw a few people with a pile of pig sandwiches that looked pretty outstanding as well. Lady Di had an ear of corn that she said was excellent. Food and drinks were plentiful.
Walking into The Moose, my wife and I both cracked up hearing a conversation that took place between two dudes half-hollering to one another, while about 20 feet apart….”hey, do you know…is my car still at Sunnyside?”. Classic…and certainly keeping in The Blade tradition in several ways.
The raffles and prizes were all so good. Brewer tickets, custom boards and bags, probably 100 feet worth of tables just full of stuff. We got shut out of the winning, but the true winners are the recipients of the support generated by some great sponsors and patrons.
This year’s shot-shot-shot-shot-shot was Gilort….a cross of Malort and Gin. Truth be told, adding the gin to it makes it far more tolerable. I had two…one Friday and one Saturday…both with Willy. Earn those stickers.
No matter what event happens or where the venue is, I always have a good time with my wife. She was in it with me on Friday and Saturday, but she is taking Sunday off. No one I’d rather be at The Blade with.
These main event Saturdays have become pretty epic. The numbers sure seem to be solid….everyone is happy to see everyone else…the smack talkin never goes away….the support and donations seem to be on the rise….and The Blade has taken on an identity of its own.
Much thanks and love to all who attended… donated….played and partied. I’m headed back down to see what Sunday has in store. Truth be told, here is where Steve Hess shined…the 3rd day of a three-day party!!
