The Weekend of the Blade

KTown Discovery Channel: Blade Week

1,127

“That’s the weekend of the Blade”. For the last half-decade, my wife and I have used that phrase many times. The first week of August has been a semi-regular target for my wife to take a full week of vacation. So it is safe to say some stuff is happening at the house in early August. And among the conversations about what the schedule held…at some point, someone would eventually say, “Well, that is the weekend of The Blade”. And it would be a true statement. It is a true statement. And plenty more, ha! Think of it in terms of the celebrations of the man….”This is the weekend of The Blade”. Takes on a little different meaning. What started as a scheduled event has grown into something as huge as the man that lends it his name. There is simply no way any other person in KTown history could be the reason that this weekend happens. And you can’t ever forget that or sell it short.

Blade was that guy. And it hurt bad enough when he left that something like this was almost inevitable. And I certainly don’t mean to downplay the incredible amount of work that has gone into the growth and success of this event…I don’t do shit but sit here and type and then show up on the weekend. The people who run The Blade can’t get enough thanks and respect. And Steve Hess is still the reason this all pulls together. And it is hard to imagine anyone in the history of this town better suited to do so. Universally respected, generally loved, a teammate to many and a competitor to many, many more, Steve Hess is the only headliner that can generate this kind of draw. And he did it and lived it in a very organic and genuine way. And of course, this IS the weekend of The Blade.

The Steve Hess Foundation has raised a boatload of money for people and families battling cancer. And this year, a cornerstone member is locked in a battle that needs our love and support. And while I don’t think anyone has ever lost sight of the fundraising and the incredible support The Steve Hess Foundation has provided, this year it’s personal for many people for many reasons. And the patrons, and the sponsors, and the volunteers make it all possible, and again, the life and legacy of Steve Hess is what puts it all in motion. If the Discovery Channel can celebrate Shark Week….KTown USA can certainly celebrate Blade Week. One is the master of his domain, an enormous presence who has been discussed and studied for decades…and the other one is a fish.

Blade Week is here, and it is indeed The Weekend of the Blade. Ball, bags, booze, babes, bourbon, bullshit, and brotherhood rule the days and nights….again…..still!  I have no idea what the weather will be because it don’t matter. Blade played and partied hard regardless of the elements or any other variable that may hinder party progress. And this year it is even more personal for a lot of the core. The Moose is the venue….get there when you can…stays as long as you want….and don’t be surprised when the time flies. The man was a “must-know” personality and the event has become a “must-attend” happening. Expect a few “Blade” updates and observations and thank you in advance for your attendance and donations….both are much appreciated. I mean…..”It’s the Weekend of the Bade”
